Why split postage out
Postage moves with carrier rates, box sizes and where your customers are. Fulfillment (pick, pack, packaging, receiving, storage, minimums, account fees) is what your 3PL actually controls and what your contract prices. Mixing them hides what changed: a bill that rose 9% because postage rose is a different problem from a bill that rose 9% because pick fees did.
How to use the number
- Track it monthly. If cost per order climbs while your order mix stays the same, something on the invoice changed. Find out which charge type.
- Compare quotes properly. Ask a new 3PL to price your real order profile (units per order, box sizes, storage), not a single "per order" headline.
- Watch storage as a share. Rising storage with flat orders usually means slow-moving stock, or space billed at a peak rather than what your contract says.
